GOD IS KING
Genesis chapter 45:25 to chapter 47:12
Brothers, including Benjamin, return to tell old father Jacob the news. Jacob can't believe it at first. They tell him everything (which means that the 10 older brothers had to tell him how they sold Joseph as a slave, and lied to father Jacob). Then he sees the royal wagons of Pharaoh, sent to take him to Egypt, to Joseph. He sees the silver, the fine clothes, the food for the journey. "I'm satisfied - Joseph is ALIVE! I will go to him before I die".
Fears to go to Egypt- Jacob, with his whole, big family of 70, sets out for EGYPT. He thanks God (with a sacrifice, as was the custom then). God speaks to him, calling him by name "JACOB, JACOB!" telling him not to be scared - "I AM WITH YOU - I will go with you; I will bring you back, you shall see Joseph" Joseph comes to meet him. Royal chariot (he really was ruler in Egypt, respected by all). Scary? Joseph leaps from the chariot, runs to Jacob, and ... throws his arms around him, and cries tears of joy (yes, before all his soldiers. There is a time when a grown man should cry.) Joseph's days of loneliness are over.
Jacob, a country shepherd, comes before Pharaoh, king over the wisest and richest kingdom in the world at that time (gold everywhere, the country that had developed art, mathematics, science and medicine). A wonder - Egyptians thought that Pharaoh was a god. But here Joseph's old father raises his hand in BLESSING over Pharaoh, praying for the One-and-Only God, Jacob's God, to do great things for Pharaoh. Pharaoh is a great king, but there is a far greater KING.
God sent Jacob's son Joseph on ahead to rescue the whole family. God later sent His own Son, Jesus, to RESCUE all of us, not from hunger, but from sin and death. Just like Joseph, Jesus was treated badly and thrown into prison. He was treated far worse than Joseph, killed on a cross. But God raised Jesus from death, and has made him KING forever. Will you trust in Him as your King - then one day He will throw His arms around you, and welcome you home, to be with Him forever. See Note, "It is enough":
1 John 4:9 "This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him."
'It is enough'. Is Jacob saying 'I'm satisfied'?, 'There is nothing more that I need'; this seems likely as he says 'I will go and see him (Joseph) before I die' 45:28. In 46:3 Jacob has fears (he was a gloomy man) but God says 'do not fear to go to Egypt'. Why was he afraid to go? Because he was leaving Canaan, the land of God's Promise? Or afraid of Pharaoh? Or that it might somehow prove false, and there would be no Joseph waiting there? Seems all of these, as God says 'I will go with you, and I will bring you out again, a great nation ... and Joseph shall close your eyes', ie, you will see Joseph before you die. Here too is a hint of the resurrection. Jacob would indeed return to Canaan in his burial, and in his descendants, yes, but also his death is not his end. 'I will bring you up...'. 'I am the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.' - these are Jesus' words many years later in proof of the resurrection. Matt. 22:32. 'Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive.' Genesis 46:30 - a fore-echo of (another) Simeon's words on seeing the baby Jesus 'Now Lord, let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation...' Luke 2:29-30]
