Daniel Chapter 12 - The Real Time Lord
"Time, time, time!" - "if I only had time" "how time flies" "just a moment" "time on my hands" "there's no time!", etc.
Dr. Who and the Time-Lords (time/space traveller) 40 years and still going! - but the real Timelord is God Himself.
v1 echo of end of Ch. 11. A time of great distress is coming. A foreshadowing of the great man of sin who will appear at the end of the world. This is Antichrist; many little antiChrists have come
1 John 2:18 (ESV) "Children, it is the last hour, & as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour." But 1 particular man is to come.
2 Thes. 2:3-4 (ESV) "Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, & the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, [4] who opposes & exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God."
(this is the one in last part of ch. 11).
No picnic at this time - "all hell breaks loose" that's the real meaning of the words! The greatest war-lord and worst tyrant ever, and he will shatter the people who trust in Christ. Will crush the true saints ("saints" are not specially good people, just people who know they can't earn their way to heaven, and so depend entirely on what Jesus has done and promised.)
Yet not abandoned - Michael the great archangel arises and battles with him (and evil one behind him). This battle is in heaven, (so Rev. 12:7); though no doubt there will be horrible battles on the earth too.
Daniel's people will be kept safe, "all who are written in the book". God knows each one (He has database), who trust in Him, just like Daniel. Parallel to Rev 12:10-11.
"they conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death."
Christ does not promise to keep His people from death, but to rescue them out of death.
v2 "multitudes" shall rise from death; God will do so - John 5 28
"Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment." (ESV).
1 Thes. 4:16 (ESV) "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."
"Clean up that mess!" "Clear out that junk!" - so God will say. We must be either cleaned up from our sin, our pride and trust in ourself, our "little" imperfections (greed, lust, envy, bitterness, lies" or we must be cleared away with all the junk forever. What will it be for you?
V3 - the wise, who trusted in Christ, shall be rewarded; they shall shine like the bright sky; they shall see Him they have loved (though imperfectly) here. And esp. those who laboured to bring others with them. "O the joy to in heaven!" (John Newton - 3 wonders - to see some I never expected - to miss some I did expect - but greatest wonder to find myself there - amazing grace!)
V4 - Daniel told to seal up these words in a book, kept safe for others to read in the ages to come (us!), and especially at the time of the end. Many will rush around trying to understand, and learn "much about lots" but God's Word is where we find all that finally matters.
V5,6 - 2 angels appear, and 1 asks the Son of God (He is the One in linen, above the river, ch10) "How long till..?" ie, to the end.
Christ (remember, this is one of those appearings of the Son before His actual birth) tells - solemn oath - 2 hands lifted. "a time, times and half a time". What is all this? Same in 7:25, and Rev 12:6 (1260 days @ 360 per yr) & 12:14. Many have puzzled their brains on this, with just as many answers! My position is that it means at least that the time of distress will be a long time, and even a desperately long time, and when we think it must be time, it will be a bit more (1/2); at height of AntiChrist's power, he will be finished! When God's faithful people seem shattered, then is when Jesus the Messiah will split the skies with a great shout, and when He will destroy that evil one "with the breath of his mouth and bring [him] to nothing by the appearance of his coming." 2 Thes. 2:8 (ESV)
V8ff - Daniel doesn't understand it all - "what's it all about?" "Go your way" - ie, keep on as a servant of Christ; nothing else really matters. "Seal up..until.. the end" All will be revealed in good time, when My servants need to know (but not before!). Compare with Rev 22:10; John told "do not seal? as the time is near"! That is, Daniel 12 foretells AD100 (when John wrote down the vision of The Revelation) till now as in the time of the end.
Now is the time for men, women, kids, to go after what really matters - to have their names in the Jesus' book of life, by faith in His dying blood that brings us forgiveness and life. Go for it! Come to Him by faith - He never turned any away that really mean "God be merciful to me, a sinner!"
1290 days and 1335 days! - 360 day years (very common - Hebrews, Babylonians, Assyrians, etc. Israel used a calendar with 12x30 days, with an extra month each 6th year, plus 1 extra month each 40th year, and very accurate, and simpler than our Gregorian mess!).
1290 is 3.5 years, if one of the leap years is in it (very likely). So seems another "time, times and half a time"
1335? Hang on a bit longer!. Parallel in Rev. 13:10 (ESV) "Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. "
Beyond that I don't know - but neither does it seem that anyone else does - many cunning ideas & little agreement, but God has not clearly told us. Those who are here when it happens (and are wise in this Bible, God's book) will know - Ahhh! They will say, so that is what it all means!
Daniel, hang on, keep on. Your time of rest is coming, and you will stand in your allotted place at the end of days. Daniel, I have a place with your name on it, reserved for you. Do not fear, but press on in patience and hope.
Let each of us do the same, and follow Daniel's faith, hope and love, by following Daniel's Saviour and King, Jesus the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ the Son of God, Who says "Surely, I am coming soon." Rev 22:20. "Amen, Come Lord Jesus!" v21.
