The Best Miracle

(from Mark's Gospel, chapter 2, from the Bible)

Jesus is back!

Jesus returns to Capernaum, where He was very well known.

People crowd in to see Him. A real "cram-in" at the house where He was staying. Some forgot their manners, pushing for the best seats. They all had one focus - Jesus, the Man with a message (the best message). A healer too, but much, much more.

Too Late!

Five men were late! Late because they were carrying two heavy burdens. Four of them were carrying their friend who could not walk. He carried a heavier load in his heart. (He was crippled, which is a very bad thing. God made all things good, but brokeness came into the world when Adam sinned).

Oops! Can't get in to see Jesus. Can't get Him to see their crippled friend. "What can we do?"

A Bright Idea

A little later, inside, dust begins to fall from the roof, above the crowd inside. As they look up in surprise, a large hole appears in the mud roof.

1, 2,3, 4 heads pop over the edge, then ropes, then a hammock comes swinging down. You could have heard a pin drop! Somehow the crowd makes room for one more person.

A Miracle

The crowd is very quiet. Jesus is standing before them, looking at the poor, crippled man at His feet. He looks up at the four friends on the roof, and sees their faith, (verse 5. Faith in Him; we can have faith in many things and people, but only faith in Jesus is sure to bring something good).

Then Jesus says to the man on the floor, "My son, your sins are forgiven". (verse 5)

What! Why not "Your legs are healed - walk."?

Some of the people grumbled in their hearts (verse 7) "Who does he think he is? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?". Now that is a good question, but a bad answer. If He can forgive sins, then He must be God.

The Second Miracle

Jesus reads their hearts. He knows what they are thinking. "What, does He know my every thought too?" Yes, and He wants to forgive you too.

He asks them a question. "What is it easier to say, your sins are forgiven, or or rise, take up your bed, and walk?"

If Jesus can do the miracle you can see, He can do the miracle you cannot see.

Jesus then says "But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" - that you may be SURE of it, "I say to you rise, take up your bed, and go to your house." Straightaway the crippled man does.

The crowd goes wild, giving praise and thanks to God, and saying "We never saw anything like this!"

The Best Miracle

Is it 1, FORGIVEN or 2, HEALED? Forgiven is first, the best miracle.

If jesus had only done this BEST MIRACLE, the man would have still blessed the day he met Jesus, God's Son, Who came to take away the sin of the world,

Will you trust in Him? Then you will share in this best of miracles, and remember this day as the best day of your life.

Mark's Gospel, chapter 2, English Standard Bible (1) And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. (2) And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. (3) And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. (4) And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. (5) And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." (6) Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, (7) "Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" (8) And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question these things in your hearts? (9) Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk'? (10) But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic - (11) "I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home." (12) And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"
